Halohydrin formation

3 real reactions from the literature, on α,β-unsaturated aldehydes, trisubstituted alkenes and styrenes. Each scheme shows starting materials, conditions and products, with the yield and reference where the source reports them.

  1. Halohydrin formation: crotonaldehyde (an α,β-unsaturated aldehyde) with Cl2, H2O gives 2-chloro-3-hydroxybutanal (the halohydrin).

  2. Halohydrin formation: [(2Z,6E)-3,7,11-trimethyldodeca-2,6,10-trienyl] acetate (a trisubstituted alkene) with NBS, (CH3)3OH; H2O, 12-25 °C gives the halohydrin.

  3. Halohydrin formation: trans-stilbene (a styrene) with NBS; H2O, DMSO gives the halohydrin.
